70/100 Slowly but (Hopefully) Surely

Two delightful young ladies from CTV made a visit to my studio since I last wrote a blog 10 days/paintings ago.  They are putting together an item on this 100 Paintings in 100 Days self-imposed challenge to be aired on TV at some time over the next wee while.  I'll send a newsletter out when I know the day and time.

Once again those 10 paintings taught me heaps - in particular the one that I've featured in this blog which took me until 11.30pm to get to this stage.  I had put two figures in with long shadows and their footsteps in the snow, but wasn't satisfied that I'd done a good enough job, so they were painted out and will be redone at the end of the 100 Days.  I'm happy with the graduation of the sky from light to dark and with the mountain peaks, which makes the painting ok as is, but I want to add an extra dimension to it.  Hopefully when I redo the people next time, I'll be happy enough with them to leave them there!

I was also pretty happy with the atmosphere I managed to capture in this painting of Cathedral Caves in the Catlins, South Island, New Zealand.  The Catlins is a beautiful area and the Cathedral Caves are quite impressive.  When we explored them earlier this year, we were delighted to find that a penguin had taken up residence in one of the caves.

Hi there Ruth, great to see your 100 paintings in 100 days are going well. I've got Mel sitting next to me and gave me a tour of your website, looking good.
My favs would have to be the Canterbury theme/pukeko ones and the amazing koru.
Keep up the awesome work, I can tell that this is a passion of yours, it's shows in your work.
All the best Frenchie

What a lovely surprise to hear from you Sarah. I'd only just finished writing my blog when you commented on it! Thanks for taking the time to have a look at them all and for your encouragement. That koru is a bit of a modern take on it so I'm glad you like it. Also, I'm planning more of the good Canterbury coloured paintings so it's good if people like them.

How are those twins of yours? They must be getting ready to be on the move. That will keep you busy!

Take care
Ruth

Nice surprise to see our paths cross again Ruth

I really like both of these, particularly Garden of Eden. I actually love the untouched look without any figures on the slope-it looks very pure.

Thanks Jacinda. I know what you mean about the Garden of Eden painting; it does have a purity about it. In fact it really is a pristine wilderness. At least it was when we went up there and since it takes a few days walk/climb to get there it should still be pretty untouched. I've heard that the ice has shrunk quite a bit though.

You have REALLY set yourself with quite a challenging challenge!! (LOL)... Most people who do this do tiny still lives which, while they still provide great opportunities to practice skills, probably don't require the time and decision making you've set out for yourself. Kudos!

As an established artist yourself Marian (I especially like your en plein air work) you are in a good position to know what a challenge this is, so thank you very much for honouring me with "kudos". There were a few weeks of preplanning involved. While I've learnt heaps and can see and feel an improvement, I'm rather looking forward to celebrating the 100th day on 26 September and catching up on other things! It's been an epic journey. - Ruth
